Designers at Nest: Tim Rundle
When it comes to design, simplicity is often best. Uncomplicated silhouettes are far more impactful than complex ones.
Honest materials will always outperform the latest fad. And intuitive functionality is, well, a no-brainer. Designing products that tick all these boxes is no easy feat, but it’s something designer Tim Rundle has mastered.
In the last five years, he has created the refined TR Bulb for Audo Copenhagen, as well as a sophisticated lighting collection for Resident. Today, we discover more about this master of simplicity and take a closer look at his elegant designs. We hope you’ll join us.
Who is Tim Rundle?
Tim Rundle is a New Zealand-born, London-based designer whose work spans furniture, lighting, interiors, technology and transport.
Tim worked as Head of Design at British manufacturer Tom Dixon, before establishing his studio in Hackney Wick in 2015.
Since then, he has worked with some of the world’s most innovative and forward-thinking brands, including Danish company, Audo Copenhagen, and New Zealand lighting specialists, Resident.
Tim is known internationally for his simple, pared-back aesthetic and top-notch functionality. In fact, he describes his work as ‘seeking to improve the manufactured environment through elegant, technically refined solutions’.
He finds inspiration in the work of contemporary designers, like Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, and Danish masters, like Poul Kjaerholm, both of which can be seen in his work.
The TR Bulb collection for Audo Copenhagen
The TR collection for Audo Copenhagen started life as a single light - the TR Bulb - and has grown to include a suspension light, table lamp and wall light.
‘The inspiration for the TR Bulb came from the nomadic way we live today; moving often, sometimes many times within a year. I wanted to create a high-quality, technically sophisticated lamp that was, in essence, a light bulb,’ Tim explains.
Tim designed the TR Bulb with our busy lives firmly in mind. Inside the unassuming spherical shade hides a concealed E27 fitting, making the light compatible with all standard European sockets. It’s easy to install and, when it comes to moving on, you can simply unscrew it and take it with you. There’s no need for any disruptive drilling or complicated re-wiring either, it’s a beautiful design that’s ready to go.
There’s no doubt the TR Bulb is one of the most practical lighting designs around, but it’s also one of the most elegant. Tim’s signature style can be found in the bulb’s fuss-free black socket and uncomplicated opal glass shade. It’s details like these that have made the design so versatile. The TR Bulb is as likely to hang in our living room, as it is in a local cafe or restaurant.
