Elements of Sheffield, RHS Chatsworth
Winner of a people’s choice award at the 2019 RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, the ‘Elements of Sheffield’ show garden explores the enduring relationship between Sheffield and the Peak District.
Designed by Chesterfield-based horticulturist Emily Barnes, this show garden showcases the relationship between the industrial heritage and proximity to the Peak District that makes Sheffield so special. Historically providing the iron-ore, gritstone and water that powered the steel industry, the Peak District is now a popular escape from city life for many of Sheffield’s residents.
Nestled against a traditional Peak District dry stone wall towards the rear of the garden, naturalistic planting, gritstone boulders and a living moss wall have been used to create a quiet, contemplative place that embodies the National Park. The pollinator-friendly planting includes Kniphofia, Digitalis, Geum, Allium and Camassia.
A sunken patio at the front of the garden represents the vibrant culture of Sheffield as a city, with steel accents used throughout. A spherical water fountain constructed from recycled steel cutlery and a Corten steel-framed pergola highlight the cities industrial heritage. To complement the steel accents in the garden, Nest provided two green Hay Palissade chairs to sit within this sunken patio area, providing a place to relax and take in the tranquillity of this beautiful show garden.
