Inside your homes: Kirsty Gore
Contemporary style, Nordic inspiration and a monochrome palette come together to create Kirsty Gore’s distinctive family home. We chat with the York-based interiors blogger to find out what inspires her style.
Kirsty Gore’s contemporary, Nordic-inspired home has really caught our eye. Based in York, Kirsty has been sharing the recent transformation of her family home, along with interiors tips with her 260k Instagram followers at @kjg_home.
Keen to find out what inspires her style, and what challenges she may have faced with her home renovation, we virtually caught up with Kirsty to ask a few questions…
Hi Kirsty! Could you begin by telling us a bit about you and what sparked your interest in interiors?
I’m a wife and Mum to three gorgeous kids. I’ve always been creative whether that’s in fashion or creating my own art or interiors. I extended and renovated my Mums’ home and then immediately renovated my own, but a love for homes and interiors has come from my parents and my sister. We were always moving and improving, and my sister has always had the most fantastic homes; I remember her discussing all the details of her home with me when I was younger.
I set up a home account to share my DIY and home improvement tips and with increasing questions and requests to help others with their homes, I decided to set up my own E-design website.
How would you describe your style?
My style is contemporary classic with a Nordic feel. I love neutrals, textures and forms.
Your home features a collection of carefully selected designs, with a sculptural and monochrome feel. When choosing timeless furniture for your home, what qualities do you look for?
Items and colours that I know will stand the test of time. Modern and minimal.
You have completely renovated your home over the past few years. Did you face any particular challenges during your renovation? And where do you begin with a project like this?
I always recommend living in the space first if you can-to get a feel of the space and to understand how you use it. Budgeting is so important. Create a spreadsheet and overestimate how much things are going to cost. Shuffle money to different areas when you save. We kept in budget with both our renovations.
Be prepared for the renovation to take longer than expected and don’t sweat the small stuff.
After curating your home, how does the space and living within it make you feel?
Anybody that comes to my home says it feels a really calm and relaxing space and I love that. I want it to feel like a home, not a show house.
What’s your go-to place for inspiration? Are there any people, places or brands that never fail to inspire you?
My favourite brands are ferm LIVING, Bo Concept, and &Tradition but websites like nest.co.uk are brilliant as you have so much choice all in one place. I’m inspired daily by other people, Instagram and Pinterest are brilliant for finding inspiration too.
After the success of sharing your own interiors on Instagram, you’ve recently began offering an e-design service. Could you share one of your top tips with us?
So many people try to bring in too many ‘trends’ into one space – keep it simple. A good way of seeing ‘your style’ is to look at your saves on Instagram and find a common theme-colours, furniture type etc. and go from there.
Also, if you’re struggling with ideas, contact an interior designer whose style you love.
You’ve also spent the last year overhauling your garden, what were your intentions for your outdoor space?
For it to be a reflection of the interior. I wanted the two spaces to flow together as we have glass across the whole of the back of the house.
