Inside your homes: Silver Soeun
Although many apartments in Seoul are on the small side, they most certainly don’t lack style. We always love seeing how great design can be layered inside a small space, and Silver Soeun’s beautiful apartment is a perfect example of this. See more of Silver’s style on Instagram @silversoeun and read on to see what inspires her interior.
Working as a home stylist, could you tell us a bit about you and what sparked your interest in interiors?
When I was young, I liked repainting my room and I used to beg my Mom for new furniture. But when I grew up and lived with my sister, it became hard to decorate my tiny room.
Whilst preparing for my wedding, I think I was more interested in decorating my new house than in a wedding dress or wedding. Maybe that's when I started to be interested in interiors.
We’ve been captivated by your varied Instagram feed, full of beautiful, iconic furniture, greenery and of course your parrots! What inspires your aesthetic?
I started growing plants because I was fascinated by the various plants that always appear in European interiors, rather than with a plant-loving heart. Yes, I’m not such a good gardener!
Many Nordic furniture designs are inspired by nature and made using natural materials. As I learned about these designs and stories, I naturally pursued a harmonious interior with nature. This is why I choose natural tones & wooden items, instead of black or steel items.
What were your initial intentions when curating your home? Have you had to make any particular considerations as you live in an apartment?
I wanted my home to be a place where my taste was revealed and where I could relax. I chose warm colours rather than cold colours, and I chose soft and cosy materials. To add colour to the bedroom, I used olive, my favourite colour, and chose white or wood for the rest of the items. This seems to have made my bedroom feel comfortable.
My home is an apartment, but there are many plants everywhere. Although it is difficult to place them where sunlight comes in, I tried to blend the plants in with the interior as much as possible.
Your home features a collection of carefully selected, timeless designs. When choosing furniture and lighting for your home, what qualities do you look for?
I try to avoid products that are too trendy, and I have many simple designs. Although the number of products in my apartment is not minimalist, all the product designs are minimal. In summary, I choose simple style and prefer a comfortable design.
What’s your favourite item in your home, and why?
It's so hard to choose one because everything has a story. If I had to pick one, I would probably choose the Outline Sofa (by Muuto) which I bought at Nest after hesitating for 3 years. It is a simple, soft leather, and very comfortable.
Do you have any interior design tips that never fail to guide you when creating your interiors?
After considering the size and shape of my space first, I then choose about 3-5 major colours to use in the space. Always decide on large furniture first and plan your small accessories whilst thinking about the overall harmony, rather than what might be fashionable.
How have you found the experience of importing furniture from Nest?
Nest is good place to buy products that you have not actually seen in person, because the site is structured well, and you can see various pictures of the products. There are also reviews from many people who have bought from all over the world, which was good to see.
You live in Seoul, South Korea. Could you tell us about some of the best places for design lovers to visit in the city?
If you are interested in Korean traditional design, I recommend you visit "Jeonju" or "a traditional palace" in Seoul. This area will provide a special experience for foreigners.
First, I recommend, ‘Cha kyung’ when you can see old Korean traditional items. The second café I recommend is named ‘Grandmother's Skill’, where you can eat delicious food made with red bean paste.
If you are interested in modern design, there are also many cafes and restaurants with beautiful interiors that sell a variety of delicious foods throughout downtown Seoul.
