Recently, Yingzhi Deng used our interior consultation service to help choose the perfect pieces for a home renovation project. Excited to see how the spaces turned out, we were virtually welcomed into this beautiful Singapore home for a little look around…
What were your initial intentions when curating your home?
We were doing a complete renovation of our new place, so our home was pretty much a blank canvas. We wanted to create a simple, understated space with a touch of fun.
Do you notice commonalities in the types of design you appreciate? What qualities do you look for?
I do love colours, prints and textures, but when buying bigger pieces for my home, I tend to go for something more minimal. Clean lines and simple shapes are easier to maintain, basic colours easier to match. But I do lookout for something interesting in each piece I buy. It could be an unusual silhouette or quirky detail...
When it comes to the designs you have selected - how were they chosen? And how did Ashlee’s advice help during this process?
I looked through tons of style references online when planning for the renovation, so some furniture ideas came from there. I also literally combed through the entire Nest website (as well as a few other ones) for inspiration. If I saw anything I liked in the shops, I would take note too.
I had to customise the upholstery of several pieces, and Ashlee was been very helpful. I also asked her about products not featured on the Nest website. Really appreciated her prompt response and sound advice.
With the pieces you chose, what were the overriding factors in the decision?
To be honest, I was primarily attracted by aesthetics. Then I would consider how each of these pieces fit into the home, and whether they were easy to match. Of course, practical considerations like comfort and whether they worked with our budget mattered a lot too. I love to read about the designers and the story behind each piece, but it rarely affects my buying decisions.
After curating your home, how does the space and living within it make you feel?
The space turned out to be rather simple like we wanted. After all, the best part of our home is the uninterrupted green view, and we want to direct people’s attention outside. Some of the Scandinavian and Japanese styled pieces we got added a sense of tranquillity and zen to the space. We matched our arched doorways, with some round lighting, and that added a touch of fun.
Your home features lots of lovely personal touches – what do you think it is that makes a home?
We were avid travellers and we’ve collected some pieces over the years. They reflect what we love and are part of our shared memories. I guess when the house reflects its owners, you can call it a home.
Do you have any further plans for your home? What can we expect from your interiors?
There are no concrete plans, but the home grows with us. It will probably change as we go through different stages of our life. Right now, I’m just thinking about getting more plants!
