Combining oiled oak and natural paper cord, this special edition of the CH24 Wishbone Chair celebrates the birth of Danish design icon Hans J. Wegner. Every year, Carl Hansen & Son creates a new version of Wegner’s most iconic design.
This year, they’ve drawn upon the talent nurtured in their apprentice workshop, where 20 aspiring cabinet makers learn their craft from the brand’s stable of master artisans. The team was commissioned to develop a new seat design for the Wishbone, resulting in the striking double-weave pattern that adorns this year’s Birthday Edition chair.
The double-weave design was further refined by the skilled weave masters at Carl Hansen & Son, reflecting the brand’s seven decades of experience working with paper cord. This reinterpretation of a design classic from 1949 features an engraved brass with Hans J. Wegner’s signature and date of birth, along with a certificate of authenticity.
With his love of natural materials and his deep understanding of the need for furniture to be functional as well as beautiful, Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) made mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1931 and subsequently entered the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. After receiving his architectural degree in 1938, he worked as a designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Muller's architectural office before establishing his own office in 1943.
