Birch plywood panel with beech veneered edges and tops. Finishing polyester lacquer, half polished, in blue (seat) and red (backrest). Structure. Crossbar edges in yellow or white.

Story

The design continues the bright coloured theme seen on the Cassina Schroeder 1 table also designed by Gerrit T Rietveld.

The block colours and style of the Red and Blue Chair ensure that it is as sought after today as it was when it was first designed in 1918.

Gerrit T Rietveld

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time.

Son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained as a cabinetmaker before embarking on a career in architecture and joining the ’De Stijl’ Movement, which helped define his progressive style. Rietveld’s most significant furniture pieces include the Red and Blue Chair in 1917, and the Zig Zag Chair designed in 1934.
