The Cherner Armchair has become a design piece that continues to retain notoriety throughout the decades. Instantly recognisable by the solid bentwood arms and tapered back, the leather seat pad addition brings a touch of comfort to the classic armchair. The unique frame is constructed from a plywood shell, utilising moulded wood technology. Crafted from Camo Sierra Leather, the robust surface treatment of the fabric offers durable and easy maintenance while sustaining the rich tones and shades of natural leather. The seat pad upholstery option incorporates functionality and comfort while retaining a large majority of uncovered wood from the original design.
Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1947 to 1949. At the same time he also began his practice, embarking on a lifetime exploration of multidisciplinary design. Although best known for his furniture design, his work included almost all aspects of design: from graphics, glassware and lighting, to his pioneering work in prefabricated housing.
