The light at first appears as a decorative accessory or petite piece of furniture. The balanced, wooden square form, elegantly frames the delicately hanging light shade, creating a striking profile that can act as both a shelf and storage facility. The Gaku is available on its own, or with a matching coloured bookend, turning the light into a multipurpose piece that can be used to store objects and accessories on top or within.
Behind the Nendo trademark is Oki Sato, the Japanese designer born in Canada in 1977. Sato graduated in 2000 from Tokyo’s Waseda University and went on to specialise in Architecture (2002). While still a student, in 2002, he won the Gold Medal at the Koizumi International Lighting Design show, in addition to many other awards.
Oki Sato founded Nendo Design Studio in 2002 and has since gone on to produce contemporary designs for Cappellini, Fritz Hansen, Wastberg and Louis Poulsen.
