With precisely balanced proportions and meticulous attention to detail, the HAY Crate Dining Bench is an exceptional example of Gerrit T. Reitveld’s understanding of architectural principles and spatial design. A sloped seat and backrest combine with supportive armrests to create a functional yet comfortable design that doesn’t overwhelm its surroundings.
The choice of solid pine makes it incredibly durable, especially when paired with a specially formulated water-based lacquer finish. A palette of muted colours enhances the overall effect of the piece. Whether used singly or with other pieces in the award-winning Crate collection, the dining bench is the perfect addition to any garden or patio.
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time.
Son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained as a cabinetmaker before embarking on a career in architecture and joining the ’De Stijl’ Movement, which helped define his progressive style. Rietveld’s most significant furniture pieces include the Red and Blue Chair in 1917, and the Zig Zag Chair designed in 1934.
