British designer David Mellor was born in Sheffield in 1930 and originally trained as a silversmith. David Mellor combined the disciplines of craftsmanship and product designer with those of a design entrepreneur. Operating as designer, manufacturer and retailer, David Mellor saw the designer's role as controlling a product through all stages from concept to customer.
