Known for its exuberant and playful aesthetic, the Memphis movement’s bold aesthetic has been tempered in the Tube Lounge Chair by the addition of Danish minimalist elements, showcasing Simon Legald’s total mastery of both styles. Legald has focused on the captivating interplay between soft and solid elements, seamlessly marrying steel tubes with the generously upholstered seat and back.
Produced by Normann Copenhagen, the chair provides the perfect place to unwind with a book or glass of wine, with an extended backrest that allows you to rest your head. The chair’s striking architectural framework provides comfort without compromising on jaw-dropping sculptural aesthetics.
Simon Legald studies design at the The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and will graduate in the Summer of 2012. His work consists of both small- and large scale products.
“Honesty is what makes a product understandable, and is what describes functionality of the products. If you understand the product, it doesn’t need any explanation. The essence of my design is for it to be bought and used. Therefore it has to satisfy not only the functional aspects, but also the psychological- and aesthetic needs. For me simplicity describes the true identity of objects, and makes them trustworthy. In my designs I try not to add any unnecessary details. I work with simplicity by highlighting the necessities instead of hiding them. It gives the product a simple and honest expression.”
