Exploring the relationship between natural materials and traditional manufacturing techniques, Sami Kallio has produced the gorgeous Pal Stool for Northern, experimenting with both oak veneer and wicker to create two similar yet strikingly different seats. This version integrates natural reed fibres into the frame so the seat is level with the solid oak surface. The legs rise to the full height of the stool, sitting alongside the frame rather than beneath it, giving both elements equal attention. The extensive use of natural materials makes the design exceptionally tactile, a joy to handle and sit on.
Sami Kallio was born in Helsinki, Finland, and moved to Gothenburg, Sweden, at the age of two. In Kallio’s own words, his work combines the melancholy of the Finnish design heritage with the humour of the Swedish tradition.
In 2009, Kallio co-founded the Gothenburg-based furniture manufacturer Brikolör. The company aims to produce furniture with a guaranteed technical durability of 300 years. In 2011, he established Sami Kallio Studio, and launched his first collection, The Finnish Blood in Me.
