Since its inception in 1949, the Ball Clock has become a classic timepiece design born from the American Mid-century Modern period. The use of mixed materials, diverse forms and hues, and the absence of numbers were true innovations at the time.
Vitra began reissuing Nelson’s revolutionary clock designs in 1999. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of these, Vitra presents four limited editions of the Ball Clock with striking colour gradients depicting Dawn, Sunrise, Sunset and Dusk - a selection of palettes to satisfy almost every taste and interior style preference.
George Nelson read architecture at the renowned Yale University and completed his studies at the American academy in Rome. He was editor in chief of the 'Architectural Forum' from 1935 to 1944.
After having set up his own Architecture and Industrial design company in 1946, he began collaborating with Vitra in 1957. His pieces, such as the Coconut chair, his clocks and the Marshmallow Sofa, are regarded highly amongst the 20th Century design classics.
