Based upon the original 1950 design – the first industrially manufactured plastic chair, the Vitra Eames Side Chair is an undisputed design classic. Originally produced in fibreglass, the Side Chair was discontinued in 1993 due to the heavy toll that fibreglass production has on the environment, only for recent advances in technology and materials to allow for the safe and ethical production of the chair in polypropylene, whilst maintaining the same shape and proportions as the original. The chair is part of the Eames collection of shell chairs. Please note, this is the pre-2024 edition of the DSR Plastic Shell Chair, made from non-recycled polypropylene.
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
