Rich with heritage, the DSW chair from Vitra is based on the original 1950s fibreglass chair design produced by the famous design duo. The first industrially manufactured plastic chair, production of the DSW was halted in the mid-1990s due to the environmental demands produced in the making of the chair, but thanks to recent advances in technology and materials, Vitra now produce a more responsible version of the the Eames Plastic Chair in the exact same shape as the original, in a polypropylene shell upholstered in a Hopsak fabric. Finally, the chair is set with a stunning dark maple base, which is combined with discrete black wiring. This chair is part of the Eames collection of shell chairs.
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
