Real homes: 6 inspiring gardens
From lush lawns to urban balconies, see how some of our favourite outdoor designs work in these 6 inspiring real homes.
A place to soak up the sun, gather with friends or family, or take time out with your favourite book – our outdoor spaces are an invaluable extension of our homes. When done right, a garden or terrace offers another room for living in, opening up a world of possibilities.
Here at Nest, we believe that outdoor furniture should be as timeless and high-quality as its indoor equivalent. So, with a desire to inspire, we’ve gathered together a few of our favourite gardens from the Nest team and our lovely customers, to show you how timeless style can work outdoors.
Christian Hawley – Nest Founder & CEO
A thought at the heart of what we do here at Nest, we’ve often heard our CEO Christian come out with the following phrase… “Buy things that will serve you once and that you will love forever. Buy once and buy quality.” True to this philosophy, Christian has accessorised his leafy Sheffield garden with the beautiful Carl Hansen & Son BM5568 Outdoor Deck Chair and Flos Bellhop Portable Table Lamp.
The BM5568 is a classic furniture design from the 1960s, conceived by Danish designer Børge Morgensen. Crafted from untreated, FSC-certified teak with a naturally high oil content, its durable design can withstand changing weather conditions and will patinate beautifully over time, acquiring a silvery hue. But this design isn’t purely beautiful – it’s practical too. When not in use, the BM5568 Deck Chair can be folded and hung on a wall mount or stored away out of sight. The seat cushion is also detachable for easy cleaning and storage.
Also providing practicality, the Flos Bellhop is a portable table lamp suitable for both indoor and outdoor use – the perfect accessory to add a little ambience to this outdoor lounge space.
Emily Barnes – Garden designer
The winner of the RHS People’s Choice Award for her ‘Elements of Sheffield’ garden at the 2019 RHS Chatsworth flower show – Emily knows a thing or two about designing outdoor spaces. That’s why we’re so delighted to see the stunning HAY Palissade Outdoor Café Set given pride of place in her garden. In beautiful Olive Green, this compact dining set provides the perfect place to sit down and enjoy a homemade pizza in front of Emily’s pizza oven.

Gerard McGuickin – Design writer
We also love this welcoming nook, created using the HAY Palissade Collection on Gerard McGuickin’s balcony. With the Palissade Chairs tucking neatly away underneath the table when not used, this set provides ample seating for 4 without being overpowering in the small space. Finished in powder-coated steel, the Palissade range is also extremely durable and requires little maintenance. It can live outside all year round and deal with whatever the UK weather throws at it!

Adam Batty – Ecommerce Website Editor at Nest
A true design connoisseur, Adam has been busy filling his new home with beautiful pieces of furniture and lighting over the past couple of years. One of the teams’ favourites here at Nest, there was no better choice for his roof terrace than the stunning HAY Palissade Lounge Chairs.
Strong without being bulky and elegant without being fragile - the clean lines of these chairs complement Adam’s pared-back roof terrace, providing the perfect place to relax without taking over the space. The linear design and curved frame make the Palissade the perfect option for smaller outdoor spaces or balconies where you don’t want the heavy presence of solid forms. With their compact footprint and permeable frames, they provide a light-touch outdoor seating solution.
To complete the look, the Muuto Halves Side Table, Audo Copenhagen Carrie Portable Table Lamp and ferm LIVING Ripple Carafe have also been utilised on this terrace.
Justin Coakley – Interior designer
Based in London, Justin Coakley is an interior designer with a love for greenery and lush textures. He has spent the past few years documenting the renovation of his South London home on Instagram @design_at_nineteen, which is where his lovely garden caught our eye.
We love Justin’s choice of a ferm LIVING Desert Lounge Chair in olive green, a colour that compliments the surrounding planting. This sophisticated colour also sits perfectly with his bold geometric floor tiles.
Did you know that every Desert Lounge Chair is made from 53 plastic bottles? The sling seat is crafted from 100% recycled, post-consumer plastic – resulting in a soft textile that’s waterproof and also extremely durable. What’s not to love?
Olivia Betts – PR & Email Marketing Coordinator
Olivia shows us a completely different take on how to style the Desert Lounge Chair, here on her balcony. The choice of a bold geometric pattern on the seat effortlessly introduces a pop of modern art to this outdoor space. And as you can clearly see – Ella the French Bulldog loves it too!
