The DAX Armchair was first designed in 1948 and presented at the New York Museum of Modern Art's 'Low-Cost Furniture Design' competition. Their organically shaped plastic seat shells were later combined with various different bases and manufactured in their millions. In this latest iteration the chair is made of recycled material, ensuring that the armchairs now offer even greater seating comfort.
Vitra continue to pursue Charles and Ray Eames’ concept of combining a comfortable seat with different bases, in order to achieve the widest use for the chair. With various bases, the Eames Plastic Armchair is suitable for both the home and offices, as well as countless other spaces. This chair is part of the Eames collection of shell chairs.
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
