Wilder was looking for a recliner to use between takes on-set, and the resulting seat is one of the most iconic pieces in the Eames's formidable oeuvre and an undoubted classic of contemporary design. Six enveloping cushions join together with zips that are attached to an elegant aluminium frame, while two loose cushions offer additional comfort. Sitting somewhere between classic lounge chair and day-bed, the Vitra Eames ES 106 Soft Pad Chaise is at home in a study, bedroom or modern morning room, adding a real sense of old Hollywood glamour and gravitas to any private office space or studio. Wilder would rely on gravity itself to wake him from his occasional snoozes, with the thin platform of the Chaise allowing for his arms to fall to his side once deep in sleep, with the action waking him from slumber.
