Resulting from many years of meticulous development, the CH24 Children’s Wishbone Chair is a downsized version of Hans J. Wegner’s iconic mid-century design. Downscaling the chair proved to be challenging, as each of the chair’s 14 components required precise reworking to preserve the chair’s original expression and perfectly balanced proportions. Even the diameter of the paper cord used for the seat has been changed to achieve a lighter feel that matches the smaller dimensions of the chair.
Crafting and assembling the chair requires more than a hundred different steps, many of which are completed by hand. It takes 75 metres of paper cord to create the chair’s iconic seat, and over an hour to weave the striking envelope pattern. Exhibiting the beautiful design and exceptional artisanship typical of Carl Hansen & Son, the Children’s Wishbone blends perfectly with other pieces of furniture and is ideally suited to future design enthusiasts.
With his love of natural materials and his deep understanding of the need for furniture to be functional as well as beautiful, Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) made mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1931 and subsequently entered the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. After receiving his architectural degree in 1938, he worked as a designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Muller's architectural office before establishing his own office in 1943.
