Derived from a series of experiments by Ray & Charles Eames to refine their plywood moulding techniques that would be used in the development of larger pieces of furniture, each Plywood Mobile consists of two abstract-shaped plywood elements that playfully revolve around one another.
Presented here in a limited edition colour-way, the Plywood Mobiles are heavily reminiscent of Ray’s graphic artworks from the Eames’ archives, with contemporaneous imagery showing that such mobiles were hung from the ceiling of the Eames’s Los Angeles home, injecting an element of play and movement into any space.
American husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames have had a profound influence on the visual character of American life, producing original work within the fields of architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and the photographic arts.
The Eames’ first partnered with Vitra in 1957 to produce some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in the history of interior design. Today Vitra continues to reflect their philosophy on design and functionality, best understood through Charles’ own words: “Recognising the need is the primary condition for the design”.
